Murder of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman,& Micheal Schwemer
On June 21, 1964, 3 young civil rights workers were murdered near Philadelphia, Mississippi. James Chaney was African American accompanied by two white people. They were arrested by the police on trumped charges and released after dark into the hands of the Ku Klux Klan who beat and murdered them. The FBI arrested 18 men but the state prosecutors refused to try the case.
Murder of Medgar Evers
Medgar Evers was an African American civil rights activist from Mississippi involved in efforts to overturn segregation at the University of Mississippi. He was Assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White Citizens Council. He had 3 children.
Ruby Bridges
In November 1960, Ruby Bridges was the first African American child to attend an all white elementary school. This school was the William Frantz Elementary school in New Orleans, LA.
